Our First Post
March 1, 2008
Here is the first post on the issue of Baltimore-based public radio station WYPR. Be gentle, dear patient readers. (At least until the twelfth post, for some of us are totally new to blogging!) Yes, that is true. Nevertheless this post will plow on.
Plowing is a good metaphor, because the abrupt and unexpected firing of Marc Steiner from WYPR on Feb. 1, 2008 has unleashed an irked curiosity to unearth what is going on at this public radio station. While WYPR’s slogan is “Your public radio,” the upper management have asserted on air that a small handful of backers who helped guarantee a loan in 2002 “own” the station. They can do anything they want, imply WYPR upper management.
I wonder if WYPR executives really speak for these backers? Either way, it does not sound like public radio to me. Many listeners and WYPR members are resolute to infuse some “public” into “public radio.”

This is great. I hope a lot of people will come in here and start talking.
I feel so unappreciated by WYPR. I love Deborah Davis and I hope she knows that this whole movement is trying to save the WYPR she works so hard for, to save it from people like Tony Brandon types.
I don’t understand how they could write off everything they heard at the CAB meeting, how they can move the BOD meeting with impunity.
Why is Marc fired because of a drop in his ratings while the GM and program director are not held responsible for a 17% overall drop in ratings?
Why?
Because Marc’s firing was not about ratings.
